Get Your Gas Appliances Checked

gas safe logo

All gas appliances in your home need to be checked once a year by a Gas Safe registered engineer and serviced accordingly. If an appliance goes unchecked and develops a problem this can cause a risk of carbon monoxide poisoning. At the same time as having your appliances checked it is always a good idea to get your gas pipes checked as well to be on the safe side. If you are a landlord of a property then it is the law that these checks are undertaken.

Servicing

If you notice any of the signs below then you need to get your appliance checked right away:

  • If the appliance has a lazy yellow flame rather than a strong blue flame
  • Black burn marks are visible on or around the gas appliance
  • The appliance isn’t functioning correctly
  • There is a faint smell of gas near the appliance
  • The pilot light will not stay lit
  • Increased condensation on windows and surfaces in the room

Safety Checks & Servicing

There is a difference between a gas appliance safety check and the servicing of an appliance. It is always a good idea to have your gas engineer check over each appliance and then you can agree with the engineer exactly what work will be carried out and the cost before committing to anything.

During and After The Gas Engineers Visit

When a gas engineer assesses an unsafe gas appliance they have to by law follow the GIUSP (Gas Industry Unsafe Situations Procedure) which provides advice to engineers on how to go about sorting out different gas safety concerns.

After the service is complete the gas safety engineer may give you a report that details what work has been completed which is called a Gas Safety Record, although this is not a legal requirement.

Chimneys, Air Vents and Flues

These are also items that need to be checked by a qualified engineer on a regular basis to ensure the appliance is correctly ventilated. When it gets cold in winter people are sometimes inclined to block of these essential forms of ventilation to stop cold air getting in, this can cause a great risk of carbon monoxide building up in the home.

Chimneys need to be checked annually to ensure they are not blocked, bird like to build nests in chimneys so it’s essential to get them checked. Your Gas Safe engineer will check for such blockages.
